130,000 people have a stroke in the UK each year – and a quarter are under 30. But the means of effective rehabilitation is often unavailable sometimes after a period of only 4 months. Once stroke survivors are on their feet again, they are often fiercely determined to conquer the temporary state of partial paralysis, but many have to continue with their lives without progression because of the serious lack of available real-life strategies that they can access and make their own.
A local group, dedicated to training stroke survivors of all ages, continues to progress at The Village Health Club in Caterham. Joanna Chamberlain, a fitness coach at the club has been working with the charity ARNI (Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury) for the past 18 months, allowing her to train people who have suffered the affects of a stroke.
The ARNI Trust has been running for the past eight years in the South of England and London some amazing successes. The reason for the Group’s existence is to fill the widely acknowledged void left after passive (and expensive) physiotherapy ends, or is no longer appropriate. People typically state that they are 'stuck in limbo' after coming home from rehabilitation… and are not able to work. ARNI’s innovative training methods are based around applications of specific physical movements derived for stroke survivors from all kinds of disciplines, disciplines. The emphasis is always on practical movement and coping strategies, from the specific to the whole.
The ARNI Trust has made their training available for stroke survivors in the age range of 10-50 who are determined to work hard at their own rehab. Training starts simply, with basic movements, and increases in intensity as you progress.
