According to the Government around 33,000 lives could be saved every year if everyone in the UK ate at least five portions of fruit and veg every day.
Only a third of people in Britain actually consume the correct amount of vitamin-packed fruit and veg, with people in Scotland and Northern Ireland being the worst offenders for unhealthy eating. As well as the fruit and vegetable daily intake guidelines it is also recommended that people have no more than 6g of salt a day and limit saturated fat to 10% of their total energy intake. 7000 lives a year could be saved if people paid closer attention to their daily salt intake, and amazing 4000 deaths could be prevented if people stuck to the Governments
The reason these guidelines are set out are because of the dangers from heart disease, stroke and cancer that can affect people who eat unhealthily. However although eating 5 portions of fruit and veg every day is a guideline that has been around for years, it is still relevant today.
As well as eating healthily, regular exercise will help to keep you healthy and fend off many medical problems, it’s scary to know that around 19,000 cancer cases in the UK are diagnosed every year that are linked to weight!
