Exercise could stop you migraines without medication

Published on Tuesday, Oct 18 2011

Recent research carried out by a Swedish trail has shown that regular aerobic exercise can work just as well as drugs and relaxation techniques in the cure for migraines.

Migraines are a problem that many people suffer with and can be associated with a number of things including stress. The Swedish report has shown that alongside relaxation therapy and the use of topiramate (the leading migraine drug treatment), exercise can be a great preventative.

For the study they used 91 women all from one headache clinic with ages varying from 18 to 65 years old.  They were randomly divided into three groups; one taking topiramate, one using relaxation therapy and one set 40 minutes of exercise three times per week. The study lasted for three months and the results somewhat surprised professionals. The findings state that all three types of treatment reduced the number of migraines overall by up to three quarters.

Although topiramate was the only treatment to decrease the severity of the migraine, it also came with a number of side effects, some of which were enough to make three withdraw from the study completely.

Not only can regular exercise prevent the migraines, it also increased the oxygen uptake of participants and also their general health making them feel more energised and healthy.
