Obesity is a growing problem in the UK and many people are simply not getting enough exercise. The way our society is changing it’s become the norm to just sit in front of a computer all day at a desk and then go home, pick up an additive-filled ready meal and then veg out in front of the telly.
But it may come as a shock to most that it is recommended that adults do a minimum of 30 minutes moderate intensity physical activity 5 days a week. But don’t panic, we’re not talking about a spinning class everyday! Moderate intensity activity can easily be introduced into your daily schedule, and it can even be broken into three 10 minute bursts or two 15 minute sessions.
Why not consider walking to the shops rather than driving, cycling to work, taking the dog for a walk or having a football kickabout or game of Frisbee on a Sunday morning?
As a general rule, exercise that is considered to be of a moderate intensity will make you a little warm or sweaty and you may be slightly out of breath. So bear that in mind when considering which daily ‘lifestyle activity’ is going to be right for you.
The government has warned however that people who are at risk from obesity or need to manage their weight need to increase the amount of exercise they do to 45-60 minutes five times a week.
And if you are a starting a fitness regime make sure you warm up and cool down after exercise and ensure you have a healthy balanced diet and keep yourself well hydrated.
