Considerations to make when joining a gym
Published on Monday, Nov 14 2011
There are many things to consider before joining a gym, whether you have used one before or you are a newcomer. Here are a few points we have put together that we think you should consider:
-
Proximity – It may sound very obvious but joining a gym which is miles from your home will only decrease the chance of you actually going. You need to think about it logically and consider when you will be using the gym and therefore where it needs to be. For example if you will be using the gym after work, it would be a good idea to find one situated close to your work. Or if you are using it at the weekends, consider joining one which is closer to your home so you have less distance to travel.
-
Your goals – Before joining a gym, make a list of the goals you would like to achieve. Whether this is weight loss, to improve general fitness or because you want to train for the marathon, making a list will help you remain focused. This could also help you decide what kind of work-out you are looking for. Gyms usually have an induction to show you how to use the equipment, so this would be the perfect time to ask which machines would be most suited to achieving your goals.
-
Facilities you require – Based on the goals you have set, consider whether the gym has the appropriate facilities for you to use. This may include a weights room, swimming pool, personal trainers or a variety of exercise classes. The facilities offered will differ depending on the gym you choose so you need to ensure the gym is offering the right facilities that are suited to your own needs.
-
Gym Membership costs – Joining the gym is a fantastic way to keep fit and healthy but it is an added cost. You should always consider your budget and how much you can afford to spend on a gym membership. As there are so many benefits to joining the gym, why not consider cutting back on other expenses such as cycling rather than driving to cut petrol costs, therefore giving you more budget to spend.
